A study published in 2012 found that the TOEFL is made up of about 5% technical jargon, words that are rarely, if ever, seen in language-learning materials. Most college-level academic texts contain less than 5% technical vocabulary (making the TOEFL vary slightly from the IELTS).
Once the 5% of the test that’s made up of technical words is removed, the TOEFL will require you to have a vocabulary of about 3500-4000 words.
